I am considering starting my own book selling website and fulfilling all of the books with Amazon – FBA. I will still list them on Amazon until I can generate enough business. My worry is putting all of my eggs in the Amazon basket.

Has anyone done this? If so, any particular recommendations?

I havent considered building my own site, but if you do, I did receive an email from amazon that they are upgrading FBA to where you can tie it into your personal website and automate the whole process. Thus you can have your own website, with your inventory being FBA and when an order is made on your personal site FBA handles the shipping for you.

Pretty amazing stuff.

I have no interest in building my own site because I think getting traffic to the site will be a major hurdle. I figure Why bother when millions of people are fishing on amazon daily?

I toyed with the idea of putting up my own site. I bought a domain, popped up a content management system, installed a checkout system, and started listing inventory. Very few people checked out the site. I canned it and decided to live with the fact that the fees I pay to the marketplaces each month are driving my sales and providing me with a customer base. Traffic is king in internet commerce.

Really the only benefit of having your own sight is to generate your own traffic but when you have commerce sites generating a million hits plus a day, why bother? Focus on books and only books. If you feel the need to expand then step up your education on modern first editions or collectible childrens books etc.
